McCreevy Gives the Game
Away
Charlie McCreevy has announced that he
will be retiring from politics when his term as EU Commissioner ends this
October. Maybe that is why he has become so disarmingly
honest.
In a recent address to the Institute of
Chartered Accountants, McCreevy revealed that the EU Commissioners knew that if
the people of Europe had been allowed to vote on the Lisbon Treaty they would
have voted No.
He acknowledged that the Brussels
bureaucracy were furious with the Irish people for voting
NO.
'When Irish people rejected the Lisbon
Treaty a year ago, the initial reaction ranged from shock to horror to temper to
vexation. That would be the view of a lot of the people who live in the Brussels
beltway.' McCreevy said.
But, he added, that after this fury subsided
a more 'realistic' approach developed among the EU elite because they knew that
if their own countries had a right to vote, they too would have rejected
it.
'On the other hand, I think all of the
politicians of Europe would have known quite well that if a similar question had
been put to their electorate in a referendum the answer in 95 per cent of
countries would have been 'No' as well," Mr McCreevy told a meeting of
accountants in Dublin.
McCreevy's admission undermines a
fundamental plank of the Yes camp. They have pretended that the reason why
people in other EU countries are not allowed to vote is because of their
national traditions of representative democracy. The German hostility to
referenda is frequently cited and explained by the fact that Hitler used
this mechanism to consolidate his power. this is a spurious reason because it
fails to explain the co-incidence of how EVERY other country bar Ireland was
denied a vote.
(Ireland only got a vote on Lisbon because
its political elite could not wriggle out of a constitutional requirement to
have a vote).
Now McCreevy has given the game away: The EU
elite knew that 95 percent of their countries would vote NO, so they denied them
a vote. Now they are forcing the only country who exercised their right to vote
No, to vote again.
